About the event
As the sun casts its golden rays upon the limestone cliffs and verdant valleys, we arrive in the Dordogne late on a Friday afternoon, greeted by the towering spires of the Château de Beynac, our nextdoor neighbor. Our home for the week is an ancient manor house in Beynac, sitting high on the cliff overlooking the Dordogn River and steps away from where the movie Chocolat was filmed. As hot air balloons drift by in the summer evening, we take a swim in our pool and then settle down for an evening meal of homemade dishes such as a vegetable tian, a Perigord salad with pears, walnuts and Cabecou cheese and a cherry clafouti for dessert.
Saturday morning after a breakfast of freshly baked warm croissants, the creamiest yogurt, the sweetest strawberries (it is strawberry season after all) and a cafe au lait we head out to explore the nearby village of Sarlat. The Saturday market in the village is a vibrant tapestry of colors, scents, and sounds, where locals and visitors alike converge to experience the essence of Périgord life. Set against the backdrop of Sarlat's medieval streets and ancient buildings, the market transforms the historic town into a bustling hub of activity. After a enjoying a leisurely lunch in the market, we head back home for an afternoon swim or a walk up the steps to the castle nextdoor, and then head out into the evening for a traditional Perigord meal at a local farm with the chef/farmer and his wife.
The following five days unfold in a similar pace and manner with a variety of daily activities including lunch and walk through formal gardens, a private guided tour of ancient cave paintings, visits to vineyards and chateaux, continued explorations of nearby villages and their lively markets, daily meals filled with foie gras, truffles, cheeses, Bergerac wines, strawberries, walnuts, ceps mushrooms and other famous local delicacies and an indulgent evening meal at home with a private chef.
Our tours are purposely small and intimate, shared with others who love the beauty of France, the gastronomy of the Dordogne and the desire to learn more about the fascinating history of the 100 year war fought here between the French and English and the ancient history of prehistoric man buried deep in the walls of the limestone caves. The tour price of $3400pp includes accomodations, all meals and entrance fees. Transportation and alcohol are not included.
